Moving can be an emotionally stressful journey, but also a physically tolling one. From packing your belongings to lifting heavy boxes, moving from one home to another can pose a number of physical threats. To avoid injury during your big move, be aware of the potential dangers that could cause physical damage to yourself and others.

    • Be aware of box weight. When packing boxes, ensure they weigh no more than what you are comfortable carrying. Typically, boxes exceeding 50 pounds are too heavy for one person to carry by themselves. Ask for help when moving heavy boxes or objects. Employ the use of a hand truck or dolly to help move large objects and avoid pulling a muscle. Don’t forget to use proper lifting technique, squatting and using the strength of your legs to lift.
    • Wear the right clothing. Moving is dirty work, so be sure to wear old clothing that you feel comfortable parting with. It is best to wear clothing that is not too loose, as baggy fabric can get caught on boxes and other moving supplies. Remember to avoid open-toed shoes and wear sneakers to better protect your feet.
    • Keep yourself organized. Properly labeling boxes will help you keep track of your belongings, and ultimately make your life easier once they reach your new home. Color code your boxes with tape to help keep track of which room or section of a home those boxes’ items belong in. Keep a list of what has been packed and moved already and what hasn’t so you don’t leave anything behind.
    • Occupy the little ones. To keep children out of harm’s way, make sure they are occupied on moving day. Trucks, hand carts and other machinery, as well as sharp tools like box cutters can be dangerous to children. Have a friend or relative watch infants or toddlers, and keep older children occupied by having them help out with packing or moving small items.
    • Keep yourself fueled and hydrated. Be sure to eat a balanced meal of carbohydrates and proteins before starting your move. It is also important to drink plenty of water to ensure you body stays hydrated. During the moving process, consume beverages with electrolytes to replace the hydration lost when sweating.
    • Ask for help. Moving requires a lot of work. Packing up boxes, having them shipped or driven to your new home, and then unpacking those boxes can’t be done alone. Ask your friends or family for help on moving day. Their physical support, as well as their emotional support, will help your move go more smoothly.
    • Keep a first aid kit on hand. Should an injury occur, it’s better to be prepared. If serious injuries occur, contact the local emergency services.
